What to wear for your family photo shoot

As a family photographer, I know how important it is to have your family’s photo taken. It’s a way to capture your family’s memories and create a lasting keepsake of that phase of your life together. However, what to wear for the photo shoot can often be a tricky decision. Here are my top tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your family photo shoot.

Firstly, I always recommend dressing in neutral colours such as white, beiges, grey, or creams. These colours are timeless and create a classic look that won’t go out of style. Neutral colours are also versatile and will look great in any setting.

Coordinating your outfits is also important. It’s best to avoid matching outfits as this can look a little outdated. Instead, choose colours that complement each other. For example, if one family member is wearing a beige jumper, another could wear a cream shirt or pale brown trousers. This way, the colours will complement each other, and the photos will look cohesive.

Using accent colours can also add a pop of colour to your photos. For example, if you’re wearing neutral colours, you could add a salmon pink scarf or a blue necklace to add a splash of colour. Just be sure not to overdo it as too many bright colours can be distracting.

It’s also best to avoid dark, patterned, or very bright clothes. Dark colours can make you disappear into the background, whilst bright colours can be distracting. Patterns can also be tricky as they can clash with the background. If you do want to wear patterns, make sure they’re subtle and not too busy.

Pastel colours work well for family photos too. They’re soft, romantic, and create a timeless look that you’ll love for years to come. If you’re not sure what pastel colours to choose, think about your home decor. What colours would work well on your walls? This way, you’ll be able to display your family photos at home, and they’ll complement your decor perfectly.
